By private car

For convenience and flexibility, the majority of travelers opt to travel from Hanoi to Pu Luong Nature Reserve by car. If you drive yourself, ensure that you have a valid driver’s license. You can use three routes to make the journey.

Route 1: Via Tan Lac (Hoa Binh)

This route extends from Hanoi to Tan Lac through Son Ba Muoi and onwards to Pu Luong. This route covers approximately 145 kilometers and will take about 3 hours and 40 minutes, ideal for adventure-seekers.

Along the way, you can drop by Lung Van, Hoa Binh’s up-and-coming tourist site, and Son Ba Muoi with its lush terraced fields. The journey does take Eo Mao Pass which slopes and thus during occasions of heavy rains turns dangerous due to the threat of landslides. Under normal circumstances, though, a 7-seater car will manage to cross safely.

Route 2: Via Ho Chi Minh Road

Ho Chi Minh Road offers a smooth, well-paved journey of approximately 180 kilometers in about 4 hours. Along the way, visitors can pause to visit such attractions as the God Fish Stream or Cuc Phuong National Park. Lunch stop at Cam Thuy, with time to visit such local attractions as the Water Wheels or Hieu Waterfall.

Route 3: Through Mai Chau (Hoa Binh)

This route is around 195 kilometers and lasts around 5 hours. It consists of winding mountain roads and steep inclines, particularly near Pu Luong, so is not as ideal for those prone to motion sickness. That being said, if you want to visit Mai Chau en route, this is your only realistic option. You can take lunch in Mai Chau before continuing on the final 40-kilometer stretch to Pu Luong.

By motorbike – A scenic adventure

For adventure-seekers on motorbikes, there are a number of scenic routes from Hanoi to Pu Luong. Covering approximately 175 kilometers, the journey passes through ethnic minority villages and breathtaking landscapes. The Ho Chi Minh Road through Luong Noi (Ba Thuoc) is one option, with a rich cultural experience in ethnic minority villages, though the trip takes 4 hours.

A second alternative is National Road 6, which has relatively flat landscapes and picturesque views. The road is on the Hanoi – Xuan Mai – Ho Chi Minh Highway – Cam Thuy – Canh Nang (Ba Thuoc) – Pu Luong, which is 195 kilometers. Those who want even more views can turn to the Lung Van route via Tan Lac, which, being slightly longer, has stunning views and takes approximately 4.5 hours to complete.

There is no direct coach from Hanoi to Pu Luong. Coaches go to Canh Nang Town in Ba Thuoc District, Thanh Hoa Province, which is approximately 20 kilometers away from Pu Luong. Visitors can then continue using a taxi or motorbike taxi to reach their final destination.

Hoang Phuong Bus operates transportation from Hanoi to Ba Thuoc District with different seats. The buses from Giap Bat and Nuoc Ngam Bus Stations, and sleeper buses from My Dinh Bus Station, operate frequently. Travelers are advised to arrive at least an hour early to complete the ticketing process.

For Bat to Ba Thuoc, Giap Bat buses leave at 8:00 AM, 11:30 AM, and 2:00 PM via the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The duration of the trip is approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes, and the fare is 120,000 VND. There is air conditioning, water to drink, a TV, and Wi-Fi on the sleeper buses to help ease the journey.

From Nuoc Ngam Bus Station, buses to Ba Thuoc also follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail and depart at 8:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, and 5:00 PM. The fare is 120,000 VND, and the buses are equipped with Wi-Fi, air conditioning, blankets, and drinking water for a comfortable journey.

This highway is appropriate for people who plan to visit Mai Chau, one of the favorite tourist destinations that lies 40 kilometers from Pu Luong. This may not be suitable for individuals with motion sickness because much of the highway consists of bent roads.
  • Hanoi – Tan Lac – Son Ba Muoi – Pu Luong: About 145 kilometers, and the shortest route, which will take about 3.5 hours. Tourists can on the way travel to Lung Van in Hoa Binh and see the stunning terrace fields of Son Ba Muoi. But there are steep mountain passes on the route, and therefore it is risky during monsoon with the possibility of landslides.
