The local people earn a major part of their livelihood from agriculture, so rice, corn, and cassava are widely grown on the terraced fields. From far away, kho Muong resembles a hidden treasure with some nice stilt houses nestled between the golden rice fields – a breathtakingly beautiful scene.

Part of the extensive cave system within Pu Luong Nature Reserve, the entrance to Kho Muong Cave is reached via a narrow dirt path surrounded by dense forest. Upon entering the cave, visitors may think they are entering a forgotten, mysterious world.

Known as Bat Cave, since it houses hundreds of bats, the high humidity and serenity of the cave also house some rare species of birds. The cave was formed from huge formations of limestone, which dates back hundreds of millions of years, and retains its raw, majestic appearance that makes one wonder at the magic of nature.

Don Village is located in the center of Pu Luong Nature Reserve, in Thanh Lam Commune, Ba Thuoc District. Rich ethnic traditions and traditional wooden houses on stilts with curved leaf roofs sheltered under trees are a staple of the area.

Don Village also has some of the biggest terraced rice fields in Thanh Hoa. Tourists who travel in late May and early June or late September and early October will see the breathtaking view of endless golden fields, together with the smell of ripened rice.

Water wheels, or water turbines, are an ingenious invention of the Thai ethnic community in Pu Luong to help channel water from mountain streams to farmland for irrigation.

Pho Don Market in Lung Niem Commune, Ba Thuoc District, Thanh Hoa Province, cannot be missed on any tour to Pu Luong. The traditional market operates twice a week: on Thursday and Sunday mornings. The Thai, Muong, and Kinh ethnic people meet together in this marketplace to trade goods and exchange cultural practices.

At Pho Don Market, a traditional system of barter still prevails: traders swap goods for goods, not for money. For instance, a chicken may swap for a bunch of vegetables and a dozen eggs, provided both parties feel the deal is fair, and people buy and sell everything with a tinge of glee and trust in each other’s words, while the prices are hardly bargained.

The peak of Pu Luong Mountain is for the really adventurous and the trekking enthusiast. It lies 1,700 meters above sea level and takes about 5-6 hours to climb on sunny days with clear views.

From its top, the hikers are rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of Pu Luong Nature Reserve. The feeling of reaching the top is incomparable. Many visitors choose to camp overnight to see the magnificent sunrise the next morning, which makes it an unforgettable experience.

Hieu Village belongs to the territory of Co Lung Commune, Ba Thuoc District – a very ancient settlement place of the Thai ethnic group. A fine road leads from Canh Nang Township to Hieu Village, exceptionally beautiful in the rice harvest time of golden color which spreads far into the sky.

It is the place where five waterfalls are located, and for all fans of wading the streams and swimming in natural pools, this village will be a real paradise. Among them, Hieu Waterfall is considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Thanh Haa Province. It lies deep in the green of a primary forest and forms a landscape of turquoise water running cascades through trees.

The pathway leading to Hieu Waterfall is well-maintained, with a charming wooden bridge leading right to the falls. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere and refreshing sound of rushing water. There is also a naturally formed “swimming pool” at the base of the waterfall, less than one meter deep, which provides a perfect spot to relax after a day of exploration.

9. Muon Waterfall

Also known as Mo Waterfall, Muon Waterfall is located in Dien Quang Commune, Ba Thuoc District. Originating from streams high in the mountains at over 500 meters in elevation, the waterfall cascades down into the valley, creating a spectacular series of 43 different tiers of varying heights.

Muon Waterfall boasts an imposing stance, yet surprisingly is quite easily accessible. The smooth sandstones at the riverbed ensure that there will be no slips while visiting for the beauty and adventure of the place.

When is the best time to visit Pu Luong?

Good visiting times are late May to early June when all the rice terraces have become brightly green, and in September to October, at the time of the golden harvest. Though Pu Luong belongs to Thanh Hoa, Pu Luong remains cool, especially because of its limestone mountains and dense forests. If these months are not suitable, it is a quiet retreat any time of the year, when much of the higher villages remain in mist, thereby adding to their charm.

1. Co lung Duck

This specialty has tender meat and small bones, thanks to the free-range farming of ducks naturally foraging alongside streams. The most famous dish is roasted duck, with an extremely rich aroma and unforgettable taste.

2. Roasted stream fish

Fish freshly caught is cleaned and marinated with herbs in the forest and then grilled on the embers. Five-colored sticky rice and local corn wine go in perfect combination with it.

3. Bamboo-tube rice

This traditional dish takes aromatic large-grain rice with the natural essence of bamboo to make this dish commonplace in local meals. 

4. Hill chicken 

The chicken grown in the hills naturally obtains firm and flavored meat is often boiled and served with special local spices prepared through secret marination. 

5. Bitter bamboo shoots

They appear in spring, and though their shoots are bitter, they taste sweet after boiling. Sweet dishes made from the shoots with seasonings typical in the region must be tried. 

6. Roasted piglet 

The piglet, after roasting, retains its sweet and tender characteristic; hence it is considered to be one of the most in-demand dishes among visitors. 

7. Can wine (Tube wine)

Made from the yeast of cassava and fresh stream water, this is a rare wine that is fermented rice wine, providing a nice, balanced harmony of sweetness and spice in the memory of travelers.
