Ha Giang is in the east borders Cao Bang province, the West borders Yen Bai and Lao Cai provinces, the South borders Tuyen Quang province, and the North borders China. As a mountainous province, the climate in Ha Giang is noticeably cold compared to the lowland and adjacent midlands. The average yearly temperature is from 21 to 23 degrees Celsius. The climate highlights are high humidity throughout the year and abundant and prolonged rain.

You may visit Ha Giang at any time of the year. People frequently visit Ha Giang in the autumn when the rice is ripe. The best months to visit are October, November, and December, when the buckwheat blossoms and cabbage fields are in full bloom. Because the tourist attractions in Ha Giang are far from each other, you should choose a journey of at least 3 days and 2 nights to have enough time to “ride a horse to see the flowers”. An itinerary of 3 days and 4 nights is recommended by many tourists or more than 5 days.

The itinerary of 3 day 2 nights trip to Ha Giang

You can choose to be in Ha Giang – Quan Ba – Yen Ninh on the first day. On the second day, you can visit Yen Minh, Dong Van, Mapileng Pass and on the last day of your trip, you can be at Mau Due, Yen Minh then back to Ha Giang.

The itinerary of 4 day 3 nights trip to Ha Giang

With the long trip, you can have more time to explore more places in Ha Giang. On the first day of your trip, you can visit Quan Ba, Yen Minh after arriving in Ha Giang. On the second day, you can travel from Yen Minh to Dong Van and try to trek Mapileng Pass. On the third day, after taking a rest at Mapileng Pass, you can try the Boat tour and visit Du Gia. On the last day of your trip, you should spend more time at Du Gia and come by Quan Ba before back to Ha Giang.

Coming to Ha Giang, don’t miss the egg rolls with a thin layer of wet dough, inside is the peach yolk color of eggs, a specialty of the top land of the country.

Chung Gu cake ( is a specialty of Ha Giang, wrapped by hand, the crust is blue or black depending on the type of rice. Thang Dien in Dong Van looks like drift cake in Hanoi, made from glutinous rice flour, and can be made vegetarian or wrapped with bean paste. Thang Co is not for everyone, but it is a Northwest specialty with the perfume of cardamom, cumin seeds, and lemongrass and the fatty taste of beef.

Upland sticky rice, pig’s feet, and tubers are used to make Au Tau porridge. The tubers are brought home, washed, and immersed in rice-washing water for one night before being boiled for around 4 hours to soften and loosen. The meat is then mixed with rice and cooked in broth from pork feet. The tubers are very poisonous, so they must be carefully processed, eaten, and have anti-arthritic pain.

Triangular cake (Tam giac mach cake) is typical of the Mong people in the rocky highlands. The process of making cakes has many stages, the harvested buckwheat seeds are dried and then ground until smooth, then mixed with water and then molded into flat round cakes, put into molds and then steamed. When eating, bake or fry. The cake has a fragrant, slightly sweet, slightly gritty taste.

Lam Bac Com Me is gradually becoming a Tay ethnic group specialty. When enjoying, Lam rice has a complex aroma mixed with banana leaves and grilled pipes, eating it with sesame salt or eating it with grilled stream fish will be interesting.
