Hoi An beach: A complete guide to the best coastal escapes

When people talk about Hoi An, they usually talk about lanterns. Yellow walls. The old town. But here is something many travelers do not know until they arrive. Hoi An has some of the most beautiful beaches in Central Vietnam.

Yes, you read that right. Just a short 10 to 15 minute bike ride from the crowded ancient streets, you will find miles of golden sand, gentle waves and fresh seafood served right on the beach. Hoi An beach is not as famous as Nha Trang or Da Nang. That is exactly why you should go. It is quieter. More relaxed. And much less crowded.

In this guide, I will show you everything you need to know about Hoi An Vietnam beach. Which beaches are the best? What to do there. Where to stay. When to go. And how to have the perfect beach day without getting lost or overpaying.

Let us dive in.

Introduction to Hoi An beaches

You’ve been walking for two days straight. Through the brightly lit streets of Hoi An’s old town. Past the yellow walls and wooden bridges. You’ve eaten Cao Lau. You’ve haggled at the night market. You’ve taken fifty photos of the Japanese Bridge.

Now your legs are tired. Your back aches a little. And you start thinking, “I need a rest.” That’s when you think of the beach.

But the question is, is Hoi An beach really that good? Or is it just a crowded stretch of sand, full of tourists, where you can’t relax?

Let me answer honestly.

It’s not like the beaches in Da Nang with their wide sandy shores, strong waves, fifty-story hotels and street vendors. Nor is it like Nha Trang with its jet skis, speedboats, floating bars, and party atmosphere from morning till night.

Hoi An beach is different. Quieter. Slower pace of life. More authentically local.

You won’t find skyscrapers here. Instead, you’ll see fishing boats. Round basket boats that the locals have used for generations. You’ll see fishermen pulling their nets ashore at dawn. You’ll smell the salt, the fish sauce and the charcoal from the small family-run eateries right on the beach. You’ll hear the waves. Not DJ music. Not the karaoke machine from the bar next door. Just the waves.

And what about the food? You won’t eat at a chain restaurant. You’ll eat at a small eatery run by an old lady who’s been grilling squid since before you were born. You’ll sit on a plastic chair, your feet buried in the sand. You’ll drink a cold Saigon beer. And you’ll watch the sun move across the sky.

That’s Hoi An beach.

But here’s the best part. You don’t need half a day to get there. The beach is only 5 km from the old town. Fifteen minutes by bike. Ten minutes by taxi. You can wake up at 7 a.m., drive to the beach, swim for an hour and still have time to get back to the old town before the crowds arrive.

The coastline here is about 5 km long. It stretches from Cua Dai in the south to An Bang in the north. Most beaches are clean. Most are safe for swimming from March to September. But not all beach areas are the same.

Some areas are very crowded with tourists. You’ll see sun loungers, umbrellas and restaurants every few meters. Some areas are almost deserted. Just you, sand and water. Some areas are better suited for swimming – calm water, smooth seabed. Others are better suited for walking – long stretches of beach where you can relax your mind.

So, the key is knowing which beach suits your needs. Do you want comfort and convenience? Go to An Bang. Do you want peace and quiet? Come to Cua Dai.

Top beaches to visit in Hoi An

Before I give you the list, let me say this. There is no single “best” beach in Hoi An. It depends on what you are looking for. Are you traveling with kids? Do you want to eat seafood without walking too far? Do you want to escape other tourists? Or do you just want a quiet place to read a book?

I have divided this guide into three beaches. Each one is different. I will tell you exactly what to expect at each one – the good and the not-so-good. No fake promises. No “every beach is perfect” nonsense.

Here they are.

An Bang beach

If you ask any local or experienced traveler to name the best Hoi An beach, most will say An Bang. And for good reason.

An Bang beach is the most developed beach near Hoi An, but do not let that scare you. It still feels relaxed and charming. The sand is soft and golden. The water is clean and calm enough for swimming. The waves are gentle, especially in the morning.

An Bang beach Hoi An umbrellas and lounge chairs
An Bang beach Hoi An umbrellas and lounge chairs

What makes An Bang special is the vibe. There are no big resorts blocking the view. Instead, you will find small, family-run restaurants right on the sand. You can rent a lounge chair for 50,000 to 100,000 VND for the whole day. Order a fresh coconut, a plate of grilled seafood, or a cold beer. Then just sit there and watch the waves.

An Bang is also very convenient. It is only 3 kilometers from Hoi An old town. A taxi takes about 10 minutes and costs around 80,000 to 100,000 VND. A bicycle takes 15 to 20 minutes if you enjoy riding. The road is flat and easy.

Best for: Travelers who want a mix of comfort and local charm. Good restaurants, clean sand and easy access.

Things to do at An Bang beach:

  • Swim in the calm morning water.
  • Eat fresh seafood at one of the beachfront restaurants like Soul Kitchen or An Bang beach Village.
  • Watch the sunset with a cold beer in your hand.
  • Take a surfing lesson (small waves, good for beginners).

Cua Dai beach

Cua Dai beach used to be the most famous beach in Hoi An. Years ago, it had wide white sand and luxury resorts. Then erosion happened. The beach got smaller. Some resorts closed or moved.

But do not ignore Cua Dai. It is still beautiful. Just different.

Cua Dai beach, a long sandy beach with blue sea and white sand
Cua Dai beach, a long sandy beach with blue sea and white sand

Today, Cua Dai beach is quieter than An Bang. There are fewer tourists. Fewer restaurants. Fewer lounge chairs. That is not a bad thing. If you want peace and space, Cua Dai is the best Hoi An beach for you.

The sand is still soft. The water is still clean. And the views are still stunning. You can walk for a long time without seeing many people. Bring your own towel and snacks. There are not as many places to rent chairs or buy food.

Cua Dai is about 4 kilometers from Hoi An old town. A taxi takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Best for: Travelers who want a quiet, uncrowded beach experience. Couples and solo travelers.

Things to do at Cua Dai beach:

  • Take a long walk along the shore.
  • Watch the fishing boats come in during the early morning.
  • Swim in the afternoon when the water is warm.
  • Take photos of the coconut trees and the wide sky.

Hidden beach (Bai Bien Hidden)

Okay, I am going to let you in on a secret. There is a third beach near Hoi An that almost no tourists know about. Locals call it Hidden beach.

It is a small cove tucked between An Bang and Cua Dai. You have to walk down a small path through some trees to reach it. There are no restaurants. No lounge chairs. No umbrellas. Just sand, rocks and water.

This is the best Hoi An beach for travelers who want to escape everyone. Bring a towel, a book and some water. Spend a few hours reading, swimming and pretending you are on a deserted island.

To find it, walk north from An Bang beach for about 15 minutes. You will see a small path leading down to a hidden cove. Or ask a local at An Bang. They will point you in the right direction.

Best for: Adventurous travelers, couples looking for privacy, photographers.

Things to do at Hidden beach:

  • Swim in complete privacy.
  • Take photos of the rocky coastline.
  • Read a book without any noise.
  • Have a picnic on the sand.

Activities and experiences at Hoi An beaches

Hoi An Vietnam beach is not just for lying down and doing nothing. There is plenty to do if you want to stay active.

Swimming

The water at Hoi An beach is safe for swimming most of the year. The best time to swim is from March to September. The water is warm, the waves are small and the current is gentle. In the rainy season from October to January, the waves get bigger and the water can be rough. Always check the flag on the beach. Red means no swimming. Green means safe.

Surfing and stand-up paddleboarding

Surfing at Hoi An beach is not like surfing in Bali or Hawaii. The waves are small. That makes it perfect for beginners. You can rent a board for about 100,000 to 150,000 VND per hour. Lessons cost around 300,000 to 500,000 VND for 1.5 to 2 hours. An Bang beach is the best spot for surfing.

Stand-up paddleboarding is also popular. The water is calm enough to paddle without falling too much.

beach volleyball and football

On weekends, locals play beach volleyball and football on An Bang beach. You can join if you ask nicely. Or just watch. It is fun to see how much energy people have even in the heat.

Sunrise and sunset walks

This is my favorite activity at Hoi An beach. Wake up early, around 5:00 AM and walk along the shore. The sun rises over the ocean. The sky turns pink and orange. Local fishermen pull their boats onto the sand. It is quiet, beautiful and free.

Sunset is also beautiful. The sun sets behind the mainland, not over the water. But the colors are still amazing. Find a spot on the sand, order a drink and watch the day end.

Fishing with locals

Some local fishermen will take you out on their round basket boats for a few hours. You can try to catch small fish using traditional methods. It is not glamorous. You might not catch anything. But it is real and authentic. Ask at An Bang beach. A trip costs around 200,000 to 300,000 VND per person.

Yoga on the beach

Several hotels and yoga studios offer beach yoga sessions in the early morning. The sound of the waves and the cool breeze make it much better than a studio.

Accommodation options near Hoi An beaches

Do you want to wake up to the sound of waves? Sleeping near Hoi An beach is a different experience than staying in the old town. It is quieter. More relaxing. And you can roll out of bed and onto the sand.

Should you stay near the beach or in the old town?

This is a common question. Here is my honest answer.

If you have 2 days or less, stay in the old town. You want to be close to the lanterns, the night market  and the restaurants.

If you have 3 days or more, split your stay. Spend the first 2 days in the old town and the last 2 days near the beach. You get the best of both worlds.

If you are a beach person and do not care about being in the middle of the action, stay near Hoi An beach the whole time. You can always take a 10-minute taxi to the old town for dinner.

Best time to visit Hoi An beaches

Timing matters. The weather at Hoi An beach changes a lot during the year. Pick the wrong month and you might get rain, wind, or rough waves. Pick the right month and you will have perfect beach days.

The best months (March to September)

From March to September, the weather is dry and sunny. The temperature is between 25°C and 35°C. The water is warm. The waves are small. This is the best time for swimming, sunbathing and surfing.

  • March to May: The perfect months. Not too hot. Not too crowded. Blue skies. Gentle wind.
  • June to August: Hotter. More tourists. But the water is very warm. Great for swimming.
  • September: Still good. A few showers here and there, but mostly sunny.

The okay months (February and October)

February is dry but can be a bit cool. The air temperature is around 22°C to 25°C. You can still swim, but the water is not as warm.

October is the start of the rainy season. You might get sunny mornings and rainy afternoons. The waves start to get bigger. Swimming is possible but not as pleasant.

The worst months (November to January)

From November to January, the weather is unpredictable. Rain is common. Strong winds blow. The waves are big and rough. Most beaches put up red flags. Swimming is not safe. Many beach restaurants close or have limited hours.

If your only time to visit is between November and January, do not expect perfect Hoi An beach days. You might get lucky with a sunny morning. But you might also get rain for three days straight. Focus on the old town instead.

Best time of day to visit

  • Morning (6:00 AM to 10:00 AM) is the best time. The sun is not too strong. The water is calm. The beach is not crowded. You can swim, walk, or eat breakfast on the sand.

  • Late afternoon (4:00 PM to 6:00 PM) is good for walking and sunset drinks. The sun is lower. The breeze picks up. It is very pleasant.

Cultural and natural attractions near Hoi An beaches

The best thing about Hoi An beach is how close it is to everything else. You can swim in the morning, explore the old town in the afternoon and watch the lanterns at night. Here are some attractions near the beaches.

Hoi An old town (10 to 15 minutes away)

This is the main reason most people come to Hoi An. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will find the Japanese Covered Bridge, ancient houses, assembly halls, and the night market. It is small enough to walk in a few hours. Go in the late afternoon to avoid the heat and see the lanterns light up.

Hoi An ancient town with its sparkling lights

Here is a tip. Do not try to see everything in one morning. You will get tired and overwhelmed. Pick two or three sights. Walk slowly. Stop for coffee. Watch the old ladies make banh xeo on the sidewalk. The magic of Hoi An is not in checking off a list. It is getting lost. So put away your map for one hour. Turn down a small alley. See where it takes you. That is how you will remember Hoi An.

Tra Que vegetable village (5 minutes from An Bang beach)

This is a small farming village just behind An Bang beach. Locals grow herbs and vegetables using traditional methods. You can take a cooking class here, or just walk through the gardens. It is free to walk around. Very peaceful.

Tra Que vegetable village grows more than 40 different types of vegetables.
Tra Que vegetable village grows more than 40 different types of vegetables.

If you have time, do not just walk through. Stop and talk to the farmers. They wake up at 4:00 AM every day to water the plants by hand. No machines. No chemicals. Just seaweed fertilizer and fresh water from the local well. You will see them carrying buckets on bamboo poles across the narrow paths between the garden beds. It is hard work, but they do it with a smile. The herbs they grow – mint, basil, cilantro, lemongrass – end up on your plate at the beach restaurants. So when you eat a fresh spring roll at An Bang, you are tasting Tra Que. That connection between the village and the beach is what makes this area special.

Cam Thanh coconut forest (10 minutes from Cua Dai beach)

The coconut forest is a maze of palm trees and narrow waterways. You can take a basket boat ride through the forest. Locals will spin the boat to make you laugh. It is touristy, but fun. A boat ride costs around 150,000 to 250,000 VND per person.

Marble mountains (25 minutes from Hoi An beach)

Yes, this is in Da Nang. But it is only a 25-minute drive from Hoi An beach. The Marble Mountains are five limestone hills with caves, pagodas and viewpoints. You climb stairs to the top. The view of the ocean and the surrounding area is worth the effort. Entrance is 40,000 VND. An elevator costs extra.

My Son sanctuary (1 hour from Hoi An beach)

My Son is an ancient Hindu temple complex in the jungle. It was built by the Cham people between the 4th and 14th centuries. It is a UNESCO site. A half-day trip from Hoi An takes about 4 to 5 hours. Many tours include a boat ride back to Hoi An. If you are staying near Hoi An beach, you can easily book a tour that picks you up from your hotel.

My Son sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage site
My Son sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage site

Here is what you need to know before you go. The temples are not as big or as well-preserved as Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Do not expect that. But they have a different kind of beauty. They are tucked into a green valley with mountains all around. The jungle has taken over some of the structures. Trees grow out of the old brick towers. It feels mysterious and slightly forgotten. That is the charm. Go early in the morning. The light is soft, the air is cool and the crowds have not arrived yet. By 10:00 AM, the tour buses start coming. You want to be leaving when they are arriving.

Tips for a perfect beach day in Hoi An

Let me share some practical tips so you do not make the common mistakes. A perfect Hoi An beach day is easy to have if you prepare.

Bring cash

Most beach restaurants and chair rentals do not accept credit cards. Bring small bills. 20,000, 50,000, 100,000 VND notes are best. There are ATMs in the old town, but not on the beach.

Arrive early for a good spot

If you want a front-row lounge chair facing the water, arrive before 9:00 AM. After 10:00 AM, the best spots are taken. This is especially true on weekends.

Rent a chair or bring a mat

Renting a lounge chair at An Bang beach costs 30,000 to 50,000 VND for the whole day. That includes an umbrella. Some restaurants give you a free chair if you order food and drinks. Ask before you sit down.

If you want to save money, bring your own beach mat. You can buy one at a local market for 30,000 to 50,000 VND. Then you can sit anywhere on the sand for free.

Wear sunscreen and reapply

The sun in Central Vietnam is strong. You can burn in 20 minutes if you are not careful. Use SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every 2 hours, especially after swimming.

Stay hydrated

Drink water. The heat will make you sweat more than you realize. Bring a big bottle of water. Or buy fresh coconuts from beach vendors. They cost 15,000 to 25,000 VND each.

Be careful with your belongings

The beaches are generally safe. But do not leave your phone, wallet, or camera unattended while you swim. Bring a waterproof bag or ask someone you trust to watch your stuff.

Respect the local culture

Hoi An Vietnam beach is not a topless or nude beach. Keep your swimsuit on. Be respectful to local fishermen and families. Do not litter. Take your trash with you.

Try the local seafood

Do not leave Hoi An beach without eating grilled seafood. The restaurants at An Bang beach serve fresh prawns, squid, clams, oysters and fish. The prices are very reasonable. A whole grilled fish costs around 150,000 to 250,000 VND. A plate of grilled squid costs 80,000 to 120,000 VND.

Check the weather and tide

Before heading to the beach, check a weather app. If the wind is strong, the waves will be rough. Not good for swimming. Also check the tide. Low tide exposes more sand. High tide brings the water closer to the restaurants.

Consider a beach day from Hoi An old town

If you are staying in the old town, you can still have a great beach day. Rent a bicycle for 30,000 to 50,000 VND. Ride to An Bang beach. It takes 15 to 20 minutes. The road is flat and pretty. You pass rice fields and small villages. Much more fun than a taxi.

Sunset at Hoi An beach golden water fishing boats palm trees conclusion
Sunset at Hoi An beach golden water fishing boats palm trees conclusion

So, is Hoi An beach worth your time? Yes. One hundred percent.

It is not the most famous beach in Vietnam. It is not the most dramatic. But it is real. It is local. It is where you go after a few days of walking through the old town to sit down, breathe and remember why you took a vacation.

You can swim. You can eat fresh seafood. You can watch the sunrise over the water. You can do nothing at all. And that is the whole point.

So next time you are in Hoi An, do not just stay in the old town. Ride a bicycle 15 minutes east. Find the sand. Take off your shoes. And let the waves wash away your worries.
