Primarily, this place is also where the emperor stored the treasury and food in the Dinh Le period, such as Salt Cave and Tien Cave.

Am Tien Pagoda was also the place of the ordination of Empress Duong Phuong Nga in the last years of her life; she took the name Bao Quang Hoang Thai Empress. In Ly’s time, Zen master Nguyen Minh No built more Buddha altars in the cave and chanted sermons for many days and nights there.

The Am Tien Ninh Binh cave area has been renovated and restored, and a new pagoda complex on the way to the ancient pagoda cave has been built. The new Am Tien area, in addition to worshiping Buddha and Zen master Nguyen Minh No, is also a temple for famous people in the Dinh Dynasty, such as Grandmaster Truong Ma Ni, Pho Ma Truong Quan Son, Princess Phu Dung, and Dowager Duong Van Nga.

You can quickly get to Am Tien Cave using a motorbike or bus because it is only 90km from Hanoi.

Bus

The most reasonable way to go to Ninh Binh is by bus. You go to one of the bus stations, such as My Dinh, Giap Bat, or Yen Nghia; cars go to Ninh Binh. The ticket price is quite reasonable, ranging from 70,000 – 80,000 VND/ turn. It only takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes.

You can opt for a limousine ride instead of a regular bus ride. This is a more premium vehicle with door-to-door service. Because this is a service car, it also limits the number of guests, but the interior is also very comfortable. The ticket price per turn ranges from 120,000 – 150,000 VND.

Motorcycles, personal cars

Suppose you have your vehicle and want to move on your own to be proactive regarding time. In that case, you can follow the directions from Hanoi to Ninh Binh: From Hanoi, go straight along National Highway 1A to the section of Giay Khau Bridge, then go in the direction of Provincial Highway 491. From here, you will notice a sign guiding the way to Am Tien Ninh Binh’s cave. If you continue straight there, you will see Am Tien Pagoda.

Train

Another form of transportation is also quite interesting, going by train. At Ninh Binh station, about 13km from Am Tien Pagoda, you can take Hanoi station to Ninh Binh station. The price of train tickets to Hanoi – Ninh Binh ranges from about 130,000 VND/ trip. The same trip time as the bus is about 2 hours and 15 minutes. After arriving at Ninh Binh station, rent a motorbike taxi or taxi to Am Tien Pagoda.
