Am Tien Cave is a famous landmark located in the land of Hoa Lu, the Ancient Capital. Around the tourist area is a towering limestone mountain, and right at the foot of the hill is a jade-blue lake, creating a landscape that exudes a mysterious and ghostly look. Am Tien Cave, as another world, hides many mysterious beauties that attract anyone who visits Ninh Binh to this place.

Am Tien cave belongs to the ancient relic complex of Hoa Lu capital in Truong Yen amnesty, Hoa Lu district, Ninh Binh. The story goes that under the Dinh dynasty, Dong An Chien was a place to keep tigers to punish sinners. Located at the foot of this mountain is the Pond of Prize, where the emperor kept crocodiles to punish sinners by throwing them into the pond for fish to eat. This is precisely where the law punished the king’s sentence.

This place is also said to be where Emperor Le Dai Hanh locked up the prisoners of the invading Song Dynasty until the return of the ambassador Ly Giac in 986, names such as Guo Quan Bien and Trieu Phung Huan. Primarily, this place is also where the emperor stored the treasury and food in the Dinh Le period, such as Salt Cave and Tien Cave.

Am Tien Pagoda was also the place of the ordination of Empress Duong Phuong Nga in the last years of her life; she took the name Bao Quang Hoang Thai Empress. In Ly’s time, Zen master Nguyen Minh No built more Buddha altars in the cave and chanted sermons for many days and nights there.

The Am Tien Ninh Binh cave area has been renovated and restored, and a new pagoda complex on the way to the ancient pagoda cave has been built. The new Am Tien area, in addition to worshiping Buddha and Zen master Nguyen Minh No, is also a temple for famous people in the Dinh Dynasty, such as Grandmaster Truong Ma Ni, Pho Ma Truong Quan Son, Princess Phu Dung, and Dowager Duong Van Nga.
