Introduction to Mu Cang Chai in Vietnam

Located in the western highlands of Yen Bai Province, Mu Cang Chai sits about 180 km from Yen Bai city center and over 300 km northwest of Hanoi. Nestled at the foot of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, the district lies at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters above sea level.
There are two main routes to reach Mu Cang Chai via National Highway 32. The first starts from Hanoi to Yen Bai, then continues 70 km to Muong Lo. Many travelers choose to rest overnight in Muong Lo and depart early the next morning, reaching Mu Cang Chai by afternoon.
Though the final stretch is only around 100 km, over 80 km of it consists of steep, winding mountain passes. As you ascend to an altitude of 1,750 meters, surrounded by mist and clouds, you’ll gradually arrive in Mu Cang Chai town.
Midway through the pass, there’s a scenic flat area — a perfect place to stop and enjoy the famous Tu Le sticky rice. The second route takes travelers along the Noi Bai – Lao Cai Expressway, up to Sa Pa, and then across the majestic O Quy Ho Pass. From there, the journey continues through Tan Uyen and Than Uyen in Lai Chau Province before reaching Mu Cang Chai.
Best time to visit Mu Cang Chai

Mu Cang Chai is beautiful all year round, so you can visit it in any season. In spring, Mu cang Chai is blanketed by the young rice shooting season.
From late May to early June, water from the pouring season makes the terraces turn into giant mirrors reflecting the sky and surrounding mountains. Then, from September to October, Mu Cang Chai enters the ripe rice season. It is also the most beautiful phase when golden fields stretch across the hills. Many great photos are created in this season.
In winter, the landscape turns into a quieter charm, like an ink painting reflecting the beauty of the mountains and forests. Until the end of December, it is time for the wild peach blossoms painting the hillsides with soft pink. Each season in Mu Cang Chai has its own beauty and that’s why travelers keep coming back, time and time again.

National Highway 32 is the only road that goes here. The other roads are only for locals and backpackers.

Route 32 is the best way for tourists to get there. My Dinh – Nhon – Son Tay – Trung Ha Ba Vi Bridge (or Dong Quang Bridge from Son Tay, turn left toward K9) is the suggested route. – Thanh Thuy – Thanh Son Phu Tho, Tan Son Thu Cuc, Ba Khe, Van Chan, and Nghia Lo town – Tu Le – Khau Pha Pass – Kim Intersection – Mu Cang Chai town.
