Origin of the name “Bai But” Beach
Bai But is also known as But Bay (Vinh But). During the reign of King Minh Mang of the Nguyen Dynasty, it was said that fishermen in the coastal area discovered a Buddha statue rising out of the sand. The fishermen brought this statue home and set up a temple to worship and then named this area – where they found out the figure was Bai But (But means Buddha).
Another legend about the origin of this name is from an ancient story, before the construction of the Linh Ung pagoda. Buddha Phat Ba Quan carried Hong Ha Nhi from the sea to the shore. After that, people named this peninsula Bai But (Buddha) to commemorate Buddha Phat Ba QuanAm and pray for peace for the fishermen of the fishing village.
